State Duma to Discuss Appeal to UN on Situation in the Middle East on October 19

18 October 2023

At the plenary session on Thursday, the State Duma will discuss its draft appeal to the United Nations regarding the Middle East situation, particularly in the aftermath of the strike on Al-Ahli hospital in the Gaza Strip. This announcement was made by Vyacheslav Volodin, the Speaker of the State Duma.

"Tomorrow, we will collaborate to draft an official statement from the State Duma concerning the developments in the Middle East, focusing on the Palestinian-Israeli conflict and the situation in Gaza, particularly in light of the recent hospital bombing," stated Volodin during the plenary session of the chamber.

As reported by the State Duma's press service, Vyacheslav Volodin has directed the State Duma Committee on International Affairs to prepare a formal condemnation from the State Duma to the United Nations regarding the strike on the hospital in Gaza.

Leonid Slutsky, the head of the Duma Committee on International Affairs, further elaborated that the deputies intend to send a similar appeal to parliaments worldwide. He criticized the United States' unilateral support for one party in the Palestinian-Israeli conflict, referring to it as "wholly biased and unjustifiable." He expressed concerns that such a stance could lead to a significantly higher number of casualties, for which Washington would bear responsibility. Consequently, the State Duma is set to adopt separate appeals to the United Nations and global parliaments on this matter.
