Nikolai Shulginov, Russian Minister of Energy, and Shafqat Ali Khan, Pakistan's Ambassador to the Russian Federation, signed a document, which will make it possible to start practical implementation of the Pakistan Stream (formerly North-South) gas pipeline construction project in the near future. This is stated in the message of the Ministry of Energy of the Russian Federation.
"The relevant departments of our countries carried out great work to prepare this protocol; its signing will allow our companies to start the practical implementation of the project in the nearest future, thereby helping the Pakistani side to strengthen its own energy security and increase the use of natural gas as an environmentally friendly energy source," Nikolai Shulginov said in the report.
The intergovernmental agreement on the construction of the North-South gas pipeline was signed by the countries in 2015. Its length will be 1.1 thousand kilometers, and the capacity will be up to 12.4 billion cubic meters per year. The pipeline should connect the liquefied gas terminals in the city of Karachi in the south of Pakistan with the city of Lahore in the north. LNG-fired power plants are to be built there.
This year, Russia and Pakistan decided to rename the joint gas pipeline project "Pakistan Stream".
