Abdulatipov: media are not sufficiently involved in coverage of interaction between Russia and OIC

24 November 2020

Despite the fact that Russia and the OIC have been cooperating quite fruitfully for many years, the media are not actively involved in the coverage of this interaction, Ramazan Abdulatipov, Russia's Permanent Representative to the OIC, said at an online conference on "Russia-Islamic World: Crossroads of Information Cooperation".

He recalled that this year marks the 15th anniversary of Russia's obtaining observer status in the Organization of Islamic Cooperation. The OIC and the Russian Foreign Ministry had previously signed a framework agreement on cooperation, under which bilateral consultations are held annually. The parties compare positions and approaches on the whole complex of bilateral relations and world policy. In many ways, the positions of Russia and the OIC coincide.

"The Islamic world and Russia are close in terms of spiritual and moral orientations of civilization", emphasized the representative of Russia to the OIC. At the same time, according to Abdulatipov, the media in the interaction between Russia and the OIC are not sufficiently involved.

The Russian public has little idea about the activities of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation and Russia's status as an observer in it. That is why it is particularly important to bring the cultural and information support for "Russian-OIC" interaction to a new level.

The main task of journalists is to fight ignorance, including in the religious sphere. Given that it is Russia and the countries of the Islamic world that more often become the targets of information provocations, cooperation between the parties in this area also seems promising,  Ramazan Abdulatipov said.
